In order to create a  good and effective skin care routine, you must take into account your skin type, your skin concerns,  and  the products that would meet the needs of, and are suitable for that skin type.

 Importance  Of Proper Skin Care

Proper skin care helps to keep the outermost surface layer of our skin in a  good health condition.  According to Dr Mehmet Oz, Cardiologist and Professor of Surgery at Columbia University, ” This layer maintains skin’s overall hydration and serves as our primary defense against the environment, so keeping it strong and healthy is critical… Using a proper skin care regimen daily can help preserve this important protective layer “.

Proper skincare which  ensures a  well maintained skin also gives  rise to a beautiful, youthful skin which would look younger for much longer. In fact,  it is believed that a good skin care is the secret of skin resilience.  It is therefore important that you develop and follow  a daily skin care routine to not only protect your skin, but  to also make it beautiful and youthful looking.

The Basic Steps Of A Good Skin Care Routine

A skin care routine involves the cleaning and moisturizing of your skin to beautify as well as protect it. The below steps, are a guide to help you develop a routine that, if followed would enable you to acquire and maintain a beautiful, glowing skin.

Step 1 – Cleanse

Washing your face is the most basic and essential step of any routine. According to New York City dermatologist Dr. Carlos Charles, “Our skin comes in contact with environmental pollutants, dirt and other factors each day that should be gently removed.”  Cleansing your face therefore ensures the removal of dirt and other impurities from it.

Aside this, it helps the skin to maintain a proper level of hydration. It is therefore important that you cleanse your face twice a day, morning and evening. Use gentle cleansing creams or gels that are non-drying and devoid of fragrance.

Step 2 – Tone

This is a part of the cleansing step in that it helps to remove any left-over dirts on the skin during cleansing. It is important as,  along with cleansing, it prepares the skin to absorb the other ingredients, like serum and cream that would follow these steps.  It also balances the skin’s PH level.

Though most experts consider this step to be optional, it can be a good way to add in specific ingredients that you may not have in your other products or add another layer of skin-replenishment.

Step 3 – Eyes

The eye area is the first port of call of aging signs. For this reason it is important to pay some attention to that delicate area to prevent it showing aging signs too early.

Because of the delicateness of this area, it is susceptible to irritation. That is why it is crucial to use a cream specifically formulated for it.

Step 4 – Serum

Serum is a skin care product which contains a higher concentration of active ingredients than moisturizer. Serum seeps deeper into the skin’s layer to give to it the nutrients to help repair it and boost the effects of your day and night creams.

It brightens, evens out skin tone, smoothens skin texture, anti-aging, hydrates- all the works.

It is unarguably the most important skincare product that you can use.

Step 5 – Moisturize

This last step is to add moisture to your skin in form of day or night cream.

Day Cream

Your day cream hydrates your skin throughout the day. It also serves as protector of your skin from the sun and other environmental stresses and pollutants. Many contain antioxidants to minimize pollution-based free radicals, and sunscreen to shield you from UV rays. This product should therefore also either contain a sunscreen or be used in conjunction with a sunscreen to protect the skin from UV rays damage. The better it is if it contains antioxidants.

Night Cream

As your body needs rest during the night to recover from the stresses of the day, so does your skin. Night creams are targetted at repairing any damage you might have picked up during the day. These creams also replenish moisture levels, which naturally dip in the evening, with emollients that often create a rich, thick texture. It provides the skin with extra nourishment to help it optimise  the skin’s natural renewal process.

These 5 steps are to be observed both morning and evening.

Other Treatments To Incorporate Into Your Routine

These are treatments which are also important  in a skin care routine, but unlike the preceding steps, they are to be observed, not every day, but once or twice a week depending on your skin type. So, it is important that you know your skin type before embarking upon them.

This is a crucial step in your routine. What it does is  similar to cleansing except that this goes deeper into the skin to dislodge any build-ups in the pores. It smoothens and refines the skin’s texture and clears it of dullness, this it does by helping to slough off dead cells on the skin to reveal a younger looking skin.

There are two methods by which exfoliation can be done. First is the Chemical Method by  which cleansers or scrubs containing chemical ingredients are used, and the second is the Mechanical Method which involves the use of abrasives to scrub off dead skin cells. Read the article, The Best Way To Exfoliate Your Skin for details of this treatment.

Face Mask

A face mask provides a gentle way of exfoliating by coating the skin like an adhesive. When it dries and is rinsed off, the mask pulls off some dead cells, debris, and oil with it.

Though the mask is not a basic requirement of a skin care routine, you may consider using it because of some benefits that are derivable from its use. For instance, it can improve your skin in various ways regardless of your skin type.

This treatment can take care of skin issues that you may have with your skin  like dehydration, large  pores size, oiliness, and others. Having a mask treatment can hydrate your skin,  reduce pores size and clean up excess oil and in the process, lighten your complexion and deal with inflamed acne, etc. They are available  in different types and formulated for the different skin types. For how to use, look for directions on the product label.

Some Important Tips

1. Do not Over Wash

Your skin acts as a natural barrier to  keeps out dirt and free radicals like environmental pollutants and at the same time  keeping in the good stuffs like moisture and natural oils. Overwashing strips the skin of natural oils that keeps it healthy and balanced. Do not overwash your face to a point  that it feels too tight and taut.

Cleansers containing alcohol also have the same effect, they strip the skin of natural oil, avoid them. Side effects of over washing includes; Rashes, irritation, dryness, and breakouts. The face should not  be washed  more than twice a day

2. Use Lukewarm Water – Not Hot Water

Washing your face with hot water can cause damage to it. According to experts, hot water, like over washing of the face, can strip it of natural oil making it dry. It can also cause it to be irritated which can lead to early aging. Aside these, it can scald your face and this would make it unsightly.

3.  Know Your Skin Type and Use Products Suitable For It

In order to effectively care for your skin, first and foremost, know your skin type and secondly, ensure to choose products specifically formulated for that skin type. Dry skin does not have the same needs as oily one. Always pay attention to the ingredients listed on the product label. A product would always indicate what skin type it is meant for. Use only products for the  skin type indicated.

4.  Never Go To Sleep Without Removing Make ups

Sleeping with you make up on can damage your skin. However, the few occasions that you forget to remove it before sleeping may not matter so much, just don’t make it a routine.

Pollutants from during the day can accumulate on the skin. With makeup on top of that, your pores can get blocked making it difficult for your skin to breathe, and the skin’s inability to breathe can make its regeneration impossible. Also, breakouts and large pores can occur as a result of sleeping with make up.

If you sleep with your makeup on, you run further risks of developing fine lines, and dark circles and puffiness around your eyes. Remove your make to give your skin the chance to breathe from underneath the products you use everyday.

No matter your age or the appearance of your skin at the moment, investing in a good skin care routine will definitely change your skin – for good.
